Brian Falkner - author vist

FDMC library was asked to host an author visit as part of the Taranaki Children's Book Festival organised by Puke Ariki. We jumped at the opportunity. Not only does Brian Falkner write wonderful novels, he is also an entertaining speaker who knows how to connect with an audience of boys. There was much laughter, eagerness to participate in answering questions and be part of the actvities Mr Falkner had organised. He cleverly linked these things into the stories of the books he has written. I especially liked the way he didn't expect the students to have read his books but gave them a desire to do so.
His message on how to get started writing was with two words "What if?" It was simple and effective. He illustrated this concept with amusing examples and incorporated it when introducing his books. It was an enjoyable  and memorable visit that the boys and staff were treated to.

It began with balloons and shouts from the boys to hit them into the fan (which was on!)

Hands up who has dreams for what they want to do when they get older?

Brian Falkner talks about the neurocap that reads brain patterns, interprets them and then produces an image on screen of what you are thinking about.

Joel has just heard that there is the potential for side effects!!!! and to let Mr Falkner know if this happens.

The neurocap is scanning his visual cortex, the anticipation of what will appear on screen fills the room.

Who can successfully identify and name all the samples of coke brands in the pottles? Fourth from the left, Benjamin, correctly answered 5 out of the 6 and won an autographed copy of one of Mr Falkner's novels.

Books that shape you

The New Zealand Book Council has put out this clever video about the impact books can have on a person's life. Enjoy! Hope you are not too young to identify the finished product. Ask one of the librarians if you are stuck.
